Versaille

Versailles, Paris
We went straight to Versailles from the airport. No sleep and it was raining.

We got lost on the way there and for that matter the way out. However, we did see a street mime which made getting lost worth it.

Anyway, Versailles big gold encrusted palace with large impersonal rooms. I wouldn't want to live there.

Personally, I prefer Fountainbleu, at the other end of the trip.

The highlights were really the hall of mirror and the gardens out back. The gardens
were designed by Le Notre “the” French landscape designer of the 18th century. Everything the king saw was designed to his pleasure. It's good to be king.

Chartre Cathedral, Isle de France
It poured down rain, but we could still see the cathedral at the top of the hill. It was so quiet and dark inside the cathedral. You could almost hear the stones singing in Latin.
Alas, while it was easy to find the cathedral. We had some..oh, shall we say problems finding our hotel. We drove around the town center about five times. Each time, as it happened, right past our hotel, which was on a main square. Did I mention that we had not had much sleep.
