This page is dedicated to Joseph J. Ackell, former Dow Jones & Co., Inc. General Manager, Production Department Head, and inventive genius. Mr. Ackell's inventions were ground breaking and revolutionary in the history of the American publishing industry.
By late 1929, Ackell had developed a "high speed ticker"capable of receiving up to 60 words per minute.
In the early 1950's, Ackell invented a system for remote typesetting. It was essentially a system where conventional hot metal linecasting machines were driven by a keyboard overlay comprised of solenoids which actuated the linecaster's keys. The solenoids were driven by punched paper tape representations of captured typesetter keystrokes. One keyboard operator could drive multiple typesetters at multiple remote publishing locations.
On January 4, 1952, The Wall Street Journal's leader story, written by Eugene J. Smith, described a highly significant development in the printing industry. "A mechanical marvel is fomenting a revolution in the business of publishing newspapers and magazines....This wonder is the Teletypesetter--TTS for short. It is a device for helping to turn words on paper into words in type. It does the job in about half the usual time. Unlike the conventional typesetting apparatus, it can be operated from a place thousands of miles from the scene of the typesetting--as far as a wire could reach."
Today, the "wire" reaches all of us who wish to be reached, and that wire brings you these information resources.
