Chicago, Friday, July 21, 2000
As expected, William Wheeler, in his capacity as State Historic Preservation Officer for Illinois, has issued a negative determination on the nomination of the Maxwell Street Historic District to the National Register of Historic Places. This is in spite of the unanimous endorsement the nomination received from Wheeler's own advisory council on June 9. The Maxwell Street Historic Preservation Coalition expected this outcome, as Wheeler did the same thing in 1994 with another, different Maxwell Street nomination. Also, two members of the Board of Trustees that oversees Wheeler's agency are married to two of UIC's developers. Because we don't trust the decision-making process in Springfield, we have appealed directly to the Keeper of the National Register in Washington, informed her of our concerns, and urged her to make an independent determination.
