The University of Illinois at Chicago has released to the Maxwell Street Historic Preservation Coalition a list of the buildings in the Maxwell Street neighborhood that are slated for "adaptive reuse," and those slated for "facade removal and relocation." The list shows 8 "adaptive reuse" buildings, 12 relocated facades, and 1 facade retained at its original location. Except for the retained facade at 1313 S. Halsted, all of the facades will be relocated to Maxwell Street between Halsted and Union. Those on the south side of the street will be mounted onto a parking garage. Two of the addresses on the list of "adaptive reuse" buildings are actually a single building that occupies several lots, reducing the number of saved buildings to just seven. Another of the adaptive reuse buildings is designated "non-contributing" in the Coalition's National Register application because it was built in 1953. The Coalition believes many more buildings can and should be saved, in their original locations, and as whole buildings, not as facades. The removal of facades from their original context reduces them to mere decorations. Maxwell Street deserves better.
