STANFORD BASEBALL
Joe Borchard's three-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning tied the game 3-3 and then his bases loaded single in the 10th scored Jody Gerut as the Stanford Cardinal defeated the Washington Huskies, 4-3 on a sunny afternoon at Sunken Diamond. The day was anything but sunny for the first seven innings as Huskie pitcher Jeff Carlsen hurled shutout ball only giving up five hits to the Cardinal batters before struggling in the eighth. Not to be out done, Stanford starter Brent Hoard had a no-hitter for four innings before giving up a leadoff double to Nick Stefonick in the fifth. Hoard left the mound in the sixth with a 2-0 deficit after giving up only the one hit while walking four and striking out nine. Justin Wayne entered and went the final 3.2 innings giving up one run on three hits, walking one and striking out four. Wayne got the win, while Jeff Heaverlo took the loss after entering the game in the tenth inning. Borchard had three hits as did Jody Gerut.
