STANFORD BASEBALL

The Cardinal broke a 6-6 tie in the top of the 11th inning by scoring six times and it looked like it was all over for the Bulldogs with closer Tony Cogan on the mound to close out the inning. But Cogan gave up four runs before Austin Coose got the final two outs and sealed a 12-10 win in a game that lasted four and a half hours. The game was expected to be a pitching duel as Stanford's Jeff Austin started against Fresno's Jeff Weaver. Austin (105pitches) gave up one run in the first and four in the second before settling down with six shutout innings then gave way to Justin Wayne in the ninth. Weaver (81pitches) started strong but was replaced in the fourth inning in his first outing of the year. Stanford was down 5-1 after two innings but slowly fought back to take the lead 6-5 in the 8th. Fresno scored the tying run in the bottom of the ninth off Wayne and a perfect relay from LF Edmund Muth to SS Jay Pecci to home plate prevented the winning run from scoring to send the game to extra innings. Cogan got Wayne out of trouble in the tenth and then the offense took over. The wild 11th saw the Cardinal get as many hits (6) and runs (6) as they had in the first 10 innings. The big blows were a two-run double by Edmund Muth and a two-run home run by John Gall. Meanwhile, Cogan was cooling off on the bench and when returning to the mound gave up four runs on three hits. The tying run was on second base when Coose got the final out.
