Robert Jr. Whitall, editor of Big City Blues Magazine, shot this historic photograph on a cold Sunday early in 2001. It is patterned after "A Great Day in Harlem," the famous 1958 Art Kane photograph of jazz musicians that was published in Esquire. Like that photograph, the sitters for this one were assembled informally. Whitall told a few people, who told a few others, and this was the result. It was published in the April 6, 2001, issue of the Chicago READER, accompanied by an article by David Whiteis.
