Boundary Justification
The boundary of the Maxwell Street Historic District has been drawn to include the standing historic buildings and some vacant lots that are associated with the commercial and cultural activity of the historic market and surrounding neighborhood. Vacant lots are included along the east boundary line so as to retain the complete outline of the north and south sides of the 700 block of Maxwell Street, and so as to not isolate some contributing buildings. The boundaries of the Maxwell Street Historic District are clearly delineated because of demolition that has taken place outside of the district and redevelopment undergone by the University of Illinois at Chicago. To the north of Roosevelt Road all historic buildings (with the exception of two buildings at Jane Addams-Hull House) have been demolished for the development of the UIC east campus. To the west of the rear alley on Halsted and south of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church there is one modern, church-owned building. To the immediate west of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church there are two modern UIC athletic buildings bounded on the south by UIC athletic fields, vacant land and three buildings owned by the UIC including the UIC-owned Maxwell Street Police Station. To the immediate west of this surrounding area is the South Water Market building complex. To the immediate east of the proposed district is the Dan Ryan Expressway, and to the immediate south of the proposed district are UPS-owned parking lots, railroad tracks, and three other scattered buildings.
