| Opus stands on the steps of the Publik Library, and begins to declaim, |
Attention, dark world of electronic gratification... I would like to announce my intellectualization! |
| He bounds through the library, past the card catalogue drawers, and the "Quiet, Please" sign, continuing, |
No more TV! No boob tube-a-roo! 'Twas turning my noodle to video goo! Yes, there's something much better for smart chaps like me... From what I have heard, it's known as "to read"! |
| He stands on the information desk, beak to nose with a woman who has, yes, glasses, gray hair, and a topknot. |
Books! I'll read books! Be they large or quite dinky! Straight from the shelves all musty and stinky! Faulkner! O'Neill! Twain and Saul Bellow!... I think I'll curl up with a few of those fellows! |
| He stands in the middle of the library's tiled floors, eyes wide and arms open in anticipation of his intellectualization. |
Yes, I'll soon be well-read! Such a fab thing to be! I've allowed plenty of time, At least an hour--- |
| He looks up at the beginning of the library's stacks, and gets the first glimmer that he might be in over his head. | ...or three. |
| We then see him sitting in front of the television set, munching on a snack, as the TV emits the word "Gilligan!..." | |
I have yet to find an official Bloom County/Outland site on the Internet.
Beyond that, though, I wasn't sure whether to laugh or cry.... This is what librarians do, after all - make knowledge accessible. They aid in human problem solving. Opus's problem was that he wanted to become "well read" and couldn't cope with the wealth of literature out there. And he apparently didn't even think to ask a librarian for suggestions. Faced with impending information overload, he went for intellectual anesthesia instead.
