So where is the "house of the water sign"? : Astrology and The Moody Blues' Strange Times |
|
Warning - Astrology was only ever a hobby for me; I am not a professional, and much of this is from memory. Take this all for what it is worth!
Forget that Mark's very extravagant mother just sent us ninety parrakeets (the mnemonic I learned for the planets). In astrology, there are ten planets: the Sun, the Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. What? The sun and moon aren't planets? True, but the majority rules - it's easier to call them planets than to refer to them as heavenly bodies or some such.
These planets rule various parts of the personality, and various signs.
Briefly. they are:
the Sun - outward appearance, personality - Leo
the Moon - the emotions - Cancer
Mercury - the mind - Gemini and Virgo
Venus - love (of course!) - Taurus and Libra
Mars - physical energy - Aries
Jupiter - growth, expansion, luck - Sagittarius
Saturn - stability, limitations - Capricorn
Uranus - sudden change - Aquarius
Neptune - unreality - Pisces
Pluto - disruptive change - Scorpio
The signs correspond with constellations. At one point, when a planet was said to be "in" a sign, it really was in front of (or very near to) the corresponding constellation. That isn't quite the case any more. (More on that later.) These days, when a planet is said to be in a sign, it means that the planet is within one thirty-degree section of the sky. (360 degrees in a circle, divided by 12 signs = 30 degrees per sign.)
The planets move with different speeds. The Sun takes about a month to travel from sign to sign. The Moon is much quicker, traversing all the signs in that same time. The outer planets (Uranus, Neptune, Pluto) take years to go from one sign to another, and are considered generational, rather than personal, influences.
