DIRECTOR OF LIBRARY SYSTEMS

Position Available:  January 1, 1999

We seek an experienced, dynamic individual to lead the Library Systems
Office in providing effective and reliable information systems for our
users and staff.  The Director is responsible for overseeing the
development, evaluation,and delivery of production Library Information
Systems, including the OPAC and integrated library management system,
local area networking for the Library, journal citation, abstract, and
full-text production databases, Web resources, and local Library

Systems Environment and Responsibilities:

The Director of Library Systems administers a team of 7.5 F.T.E. staff
(with authorization for two additional new positions) in the Library
Systems Office. This team is responsible for library information systems
that serve the clientele of the world's largest public university library. 
The Library's collections contain 9 million volumes and 16.5 million items
within 42 decentralized library units, and a network of over 1,000 public
and staff workstations.  Each week, more than one million patrons from
around the world use the University Library's online resources through the
Internet, and thousands use the Library's on-site resources on a daily
basis.  The Library belongs to the Illinois Library Computer Systems
Organization (ILCSO), a 45-member statewide consortium of academic and
research libraries.  ILCSO is currently implementing a new, shared
integrated library management system (DRA).  The Library is also actively
engaged in cooperative resource sharing initiatives through its
participation in the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC), an
academic consortium of the Big Ten Universities and the University of
Chicago. 

The Director of Library Systems reports to the University Librarian, and
is a member of the Library's Administrative Management Group.  This
position represents the Library in campus, state, regional, and national
organizations related to Library online resources.  It is one of several
campus representatives to higher education organizations devoted to
networking and digital information access, such as CNI and EDUCAUSE. 

The Director of Library Systems is responsible for the overall planning,
implementation, and evaluation of the Library's production information
systems.  Key among these responsibilities is the development and delivery
of the Library's OPAC (DRA) and integrated library management system,
journal citation, abstract, full-text databases, and Web-based resources. 
In conjunction with others, the Director of Library Systems analyzes the
Library's needs from the technical and access standpoints, and is
responsible for shaping effective and cohesive delivery mechanisms for
electronic resources.  The Director of Library Systems oversees the
technical support of the Library's local area network and office
automation (including public and staff workstations, hardware, software,
and networking configuration), evaluates the current use of these
resources, and is responsible for the planning involved in upgrading and
augmenting these support systems for the Library.  The Director of Library
Systems is responsible for budget planning and development to support
Library Systems activities.  This position is also integrally involved in
process analysis, the evaluation of workflow and the recommendation of
technical approaches to make them more effective. 

The Library's involvement in the campus information technology environment
includes collaborative agreements with the Graduate School of Library and
Information Science (GSLIS) and the National Center for Supercomputing
Applications (NCSA).  Within the Library, an organized group of faculty
are actively involved in externally sponsored projects to develop
experimental digital information applications, including the NSF/ARPA/NASA
Digital Libraries Initiative Project, the Kolb-Proust Archive for
research, and the Digital Imaging Initiative.  The Director of Library
Systems is a member of that group, with the integral role of devising
reliable, effective technology transfer methods to migrate experimental
projects into production services that meet the needs of our user
community.
 
Qualifications:  

Required:  Master's degree in Library and Information Science, Computer
Science, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and
experience beyond the bachelor's degree; a record of increasingly
responsible assignments in management positions that involve large-scale
systems implementation; evidence of working knowledge of computer
hardware, software, and networking; demonstrated leadership in motivating
staff and organizing resources to provide quality information services;
successful supervisory and project management experience; excellent
written and interpersonal communication skills. 

Preferred:  Involvement in professional organizations.  Knowledge of a
university library's operations, challenges, and opportunities.  

Salary & Rank:  Salary and rank are commensurate with experience and
credentials, with an opening salary of $75,000 upward.  The position is
either a full-time Academic Professional appointment, or a Faculty
appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor with tenure,
depending upon qualifications.  Appointment with Faculty rank may be
considered for those with the requisite scholarly research and publication
record, and contributions as a scholar/researcher having noticeable impact
in the field. 

Terms of Appointment: 

Twenty-four work days vacation per year; 11 paid holidays per year; 12
days annual sick leave (cumulative) plus an additional 13 days
(non-cumulative) per year if necessary; health insurance, requiring a
small co-payment, is provided to employees (coverage for dependents may be
purchased); participation in the State Universities Retirement System,
which includes several private options, is compulsory upon appointment (8%
of member's salary is withheld and is refundable upon termination); newly
hired university employees are covered by the Medicare portion of Social
Security, and are subject to its deduction.
