Hiragana for Lesson 5
![]() |
お pronunced /oh/. It is the fifth in the hiragana and the last in the あ行 a-gyou, the first
(right-hand) row in the hiragana. お comes from the character 於, if you can believe it! Words to practice for today: おおい (多い) many うお (魚) fish, obsolete word, but used in 魚いちば uo ichiba, fish market |
お is an easy sound, but it can be difficult to tell the difference between おお oo and おう ou. Many books teach that they are pronounced the same, but native speakers differentiate. おう tends to be one sound drawn out, whereas おお is given a bit of force in the breath.
This difference in pronunciation is spelled differently; the spelling system is called 仮名遣い. If you don't have a native speaker to practice this difference, you can pronounce them the same until you have an opportunity.
Remember to keep the 書き順 kaki-jun and direction!
