Hiragana for Lesson 26

is pronounced /to/. It is the 5番目( in the た行, the 4行目 (ぎょ) in the hiragana.

と comes from the 漢字( 止.

Words to practice for today:

(時計) clock (砂糖) sugar
(遠い) far, distant と(事) act of doing
と(音) noise, sound と(外) outside, out of
と probably ど(角) corner, angle

と with 濁点 makes ど do.

時計 can mean either a watch or clock. 腕時計() can be used to specify a watch, but 時計 is more common. Note that 音便(), pronunciation change to make it easier to say, has happened in 腕時計. This always happens in 時計 compounds. 日時計() sundial and 砂時計() hour-glass/egg timer (these measure time using sand).

砂糖 also undergoes 音便(おんびん) in compounds.

黒砂糖 brown (literally, black) sugar
角砂糖 sugar cube
白砂糖 white sugar (this word is not so common)

こと(事) is what is called a "nominalizer." It changes verbs into nouns.

買うこと the act of buying
会うこと the act of meeting
書くこと the act of writing

The word 角 refers to the corner of an object, not of a room. The corner of a room is a .

Remember to keep the 書き順 と (and) 方向!
