Hiragana for Lesson 3

pronunced /oo/ as in "boot" is the third kana in the Japanese syllabary, the hiragana.

comes from the character 宇 u.

Words to practice for today:

ushi, cow (either male or female)

uni, sea urchin (a delicacy at sushi-ya)

usui, light (in color), thin (as in soup)

Along with tsu and n', う is a difficult sound to make. It is closer to the French u than English. The best way to practice is with a native Japanese person, using words that begin with う.

Remember to keep the 書き順 (stroke order) and direction!

書き順と方向をしっかりと守ってください。
