GUIDELINES FOR MAMMOGRAPHY:

We also want to provide you with information on any questions you may have concerning women's issues. The following are the Guidelines for Mammography: A baseline mammogram between the ages of 35 and 40. Between 40 and 50, a mammogram every one or two years is required. After the age of 50, a screening mammogram every year is required. Remember breast cancer is curable. Also, in most instances, mastectomy is not required. Lumpectomy and radiotherapy are often the curative treatments of choice. Most women are therefore left with both breasts and the rest of their lives in front of them. For those requiring mastectomy, breast reconstruction now has remarkable results and often restores a woman's sense of self and body image. Do not put off your mammogram because of fear, you should fear not knowing if you have something that is growing in your breast. It can be cured! If you have any questions about this topic, or any other topic pertaining to women's health please give us a call at 212 838-4243.

Metro Area Breast Cancer Registry

Six New York metropolitan hospitals are collaborating on a new international breast cancer research project which may begin to answer questions about genetics and breast cancer. The project, which is funded by the National Cancer Institute, is being carried out at 11 sites around the world.

The Metropolitan New York Registry will serve as a valuable resource for researchers investigating genetic and environmental factors in breast cancer risk, particularly among families at risk. The Registry will include members of families with a history of breast or ovarian cancer. Participants in the project will receive newsletters with information on up-to-the-minute findings, educational seminars and videotapes. Referrals for genetic counseling will also be provided.

Families with two or more relatives with breast or ovarian cancer, or individuals with a relative with early age diagnosis or a male relative with breast cancer are encouraged to participate. The six participating hospitals are: New York University Medical Center, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Certer, Beth Israel Medical Center, Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center, Mt. Sinai Medical Center and SUNY Health Science Center at Stonybrook.

Patients with appropriate medical histories should contact any one of the six participating hospitals.
