Book Review The Journal of Sean Sullivan is a book from the My Name is America series, a bit like the Dear America stories, but featuring boys instead of girls. The Journal of Sean Sullivan is about a young man who joins his father in working on the transcontinental railroad project in 1868-1869. While working, he writes letters to his brother John in Chicago. His mother is no longer alive and his only family are his father, his brother, and an aunt and uncle. On the railroad, Sean Sullivan begins as a water boy, but over time is given more responsibility until he is a spiker. In the story we learn of the two companies that were trying to reach the same area. One of these employed many Chinese workers, while the one Sean works for employed Americans and Irish workers. Many of the Irish expressed hate against the Chinese. Through his experiences, Sean learns to be a man. He also learns that different people have different ideas about others. ![]() |
