Dreams in the Golden Country is the story of a 12-year-old Jewish immigrant girl. She comes from Russia and when she first arrives in America expresses how much she hates this country. Early in her diary she writes, "America, land of opportunity… yeah, right."

She writes about many changes in her diary over 18 months. Her sister Miriam gets married and leaves. Her friend Mamie dies in a fire. She and her friend Blu aren't in the same grade in school anymore. She and her family change many of their traditional Jewish ways, adjusting them to the ways of the "Yankees."

The story is very sad because so many people die. Just as sad, however, are the changes that affect her family.

Of all the Dear America books that I have read, I think that this is one of my favorites. This is because my family also emigrated from Russia and we are Jewish. I can relate well to the experiences depicted. I also recommend this book because it is written very well. If you read this book, I think you will enjoy it as much as I did.
