Catan die erste Insel
Individual Scenarios
Individual Scenarios
The individual scenarios are those that you may start playing immediately
(assuming you're not in need of the tutorials). Most of these scenarios are
those from the basic game and Seafarers. There are two omissions: The Great
Crossing (which is part of the campaign) and A New World. Most of these
scenarios include different versions depending on the number of players.
I have placed these scenarios in the order in which they were published in
the board game rules. As such, the first scenarios on the list tend to be
easier than those further down the list. In the computer game itself, the
scenarios are listed in German alphabetical order.
Basisinsel (Basic Island) - 3/4 Players, 5/6 Players
This is the basic Settlers of Catan game. The 3/4 player setup is the version
given in the German edition of the Settlers of Catan rules. If you want to
play with a variable setup, then select Variables Spiel (Variable Play).
Zu neuen Ufern (New Shores) - 3/4 Players
This is the first scenario from Seafarers. You start on a basic game island
and seek to explore neighboring islands. There are no disasters to contend
with or mysteries to solve - just sail forth and settle. If you are new to
Seafarers, this should be the first scenario you attempt.
Das 4 Inseln (The 4 Islands) - 3 Players, 4 Players
Das 5 Inseln (The 5 Islands) - 5 Players
Das 6 Inseln (The 6 Islands) - 6 Players
These are the same as the Seafarers scenarios of the same name. There is no
main island. You setup on one or two of the small islands and try to explore
the other islands on the map.
Ozeanien (Oceans) - 3, 4, 5, 6 Players
These are the Seafarers scenarios that start with a group of hexes hidden
from view. On the board game, the hexes are turned upside-down. In the
computer version, they are obscured by fog. The Oceans scenarios are the only
Individual Scenarios that change from play to play. While the initial hexes
are always the same, the hidden lands are selected randomly.
Version 1.59 and later includes Oceans scenarios in the Variable Play area.
This will allow you to explore some alternate layouts for the initial lands.
Durch die Wüste (Into the Desert) - 3, 4, 5, or 6 Players
These are the same as the Seafarers scenarios of the same name. Some sections
are separated from the starting are by deserts rather than ocean. So, you may
explore new areas through either roads or ships.
Groß-Catan (Greater Catan) - 4 Players, 5-6 Players
What implementation of Seafarers would be complete without Greater Catan?
It's time to explore new territories. So how is this different? First, you
are allowed to build up to eight cities (rather than four). Second, you have
only a limited number of number tiles for the outer islands, and when you run
out, any new areas reached take their tiles from the main board. Greater
Catan is one of the four game types offered under Variable Play.
Das Atoll (The Atoll) - 4 Players
This is a new scenario that includes a dual-ringed island. The pirate ship
sails about the waters between the two rings, moving one hex each time
a 7 is rolled.
Vulkan (Volcano) - 3/4 Players
The volcano is a variant that appears at both the Mayfair and German offical
web sites. In short, the desert is replaced with a volcano. When a volcano's
eruption number is rolled, it destroys a settlement (or reduces a city) that
is located at a randomly-selected adjacent intersection (if nothing is at
that intersection, then everyone is safe).
The computer implements the gold variant, which means that the volcano also
produces resources in the same way as a gold shores hex. So, placing a
settlement next to a volcano can be worth the rick. The one thing that is
different in the computer version is that the eruption number is the
complement of the production number (so if the production number is 9, then
the eruption number is 5). I would guess that they originally planned to
implement volcanoes that way on the board game variant, but decided that
having two different numbers would be a bit confusing.
The volcano variant appears to be the favorite of many people. As such, it is
included in the Variable Play section, with an impressive number of different
layouts (including some where there are either two volcanoes or a different
lany type being replaced by the volcano).
Feuerland (Fire Land) - 4 Players
This is a new scenario with a similar these to Into the Desert. This scenario
includes some alternate artwork for the deserts, though they act just like
any other deserts in the game (they produce nothing). Another difference in
this scenario is that the number tiles for unknown areas are not displayed
until you build a settlement adjacent to the hex. As to make things more
intersting, this scenario also includes a couple volcanoes.
Wüstenreiter (Desert Rider) - 3/4 Players, 5/6 Players
The Desert Rider variant also appears at the Mayfair official web site.
This scenario does not use the exact layout as the one at the web site,
as the board scenario includes volcanoes and jungles (a version of this
scenario with a volcano is included in the Campaign).
This is another scenario that involves flight from a disaster. In this case,
riders have invaded the land some the northern deserts. You have to set up
new settlements off the main island before the riders take over everything.
