Catan die erste Insel
Tutorial Scenarios

Tutorials

The tutorials include four scenarios, each intended to teach a new element of the game. The first two use only the rules from the basic game, while the final two add the rules from Seafarers. Note that in these scenarios, your opponents make no real attempt to win the game. The purpose of these scenarios is to learn how to play the game, and not to face any stiff competition.

First Basic Game Tutorial

The first tutorial uses only the resources required to build roads and settlements. Ore is not used in the game (The bank won't sell you any either). The scenario ends as soon as you build a settlement adjacent to a mountain. The game sets up the initial settlements and gives you two of each of the resources available (your opponents start with nothing). All you have to do is build a few roads to get to a mountain intersection and build a settlement. Since the game does not award initial victory points in this scenario, you will win with a minimum of three victory points (one for the settlement you built next to the mountain and two for the longest road, as you'll have it by the time you reach the mountains).

Second Basic Game Tutorial

The second tutorial introduces the remaining elements of the basic game. This means that you now have cities and development cards, as well as the ore you'll need to buy them. This tutorial also adds harbors to improve your trade with the bank.

In this scenario, you set up like you would in a standard game (each player selects the locations for their initial settlements). Unlike a real game, though, the player still receives a head start by starting with three ore and two of every other resource (just hope you get to use them before someone rolls a seven).

To complete this tutorial, you need to build two cities and play a knight card. Your starting resrouces should provide enough for the first city. For kicks, I decided to see how many victory points I could earn before accomplishing the victory conditions. I managed to finish the game with fourteen victory points: four settlements, two cities, largest army, longest road, and two victory point cards.

First Seafarers Tutorial

This tutorial introduces ships. The object is to reach the gold island. Since the game ends when you reach the golden island, exchanging gold for resources is not introduced in this scenario. Prior to the patch, the robber started off the board and the pirate ship wasn't introduced. There turned out to be a couple bugs with this, so they decided to put the robber on the golden island and the pirate ship in a far corner.

The setup island has only wood and sheep on it, so you could have plenty of resources for building your ships. They also place a sheep harbor at a location too good to ignore. As you head for the gold island, you will reach an island that has grain and brick to help in building the settlement at your final destination. You can laugh at the irony if you really bother to build a settlement on the brick island.

Second Seafarers Tutorial

The final scenario adds fog (but not Oceans rules) and readily available gold hexes. What it also features are tight resources, as the opening island is extremely cramped and there are only a few numbers that generate resources (it did not help that I opened with a seven in this game, which tossed half the free starting resources the tutorial provides). I also found it difficult to find a good place to move the robber, so I tended to move the pirate ship instead.
