WELCOME TO MY GENEALOGY WEB PAGE

Genealogy...
Anyone who has pursued this search knows how frustrating it can be, and how rewarding it can be. I use a program called Family Tree Maker, but there are many other programs available to fit all budgets, from free software to expensive programs.

Take a look at the following information. If you are researching any of these folks, PLEASE, PLEASE contact me! As I learn more I'll add the information to the following outline. My immediate questions are highlighted in red. The black highlighted names in the list are names I've yet to research of people who married into the main line families.

This is an image of the last rose of summer from my garden one winter. Click on a rare winter scene from my rose garden to visit my Family Tree Maker genealogy Web site. I sure hope that if you are researching the same family lines you will contact me.

I am also continuing the search for my daughter-in-law's ancestors. You will find those names below as well. Please contact me if you have information to share or need something from me.

8. IGNATZ (IGNATIUS)7 BRUCH (MATHÄUS6, MATHÄUS5, FRANCISCUS CAROLUS4, GABRIEL3, JOHANNES2, MARTIN1) was born 31 Jan 1822 in Oberschopfheim, Baden, Germany, and died 14 Jul 1860 in Alton, Illinois. He married OTILIE/OTILLIE WALTER 03 Nov 1846 in St John the Baptist Catholic Church, Cincinnati, Ohio, daughter of ANTON WALTER and THERESIA SEIDEL. She was born 13 Dec 1825 in Baden, Germany, and died 23 Aug 1903 in Alton, Illinois.
Notes for IGNATZ (IGNATIUS) BRUCH:

Ignatz (Ignatius) Bruch was a master stone-cutter from Oberschopfheim, Baden (in modern Germany), who came to America in 1846 and located in Alton, Illinois, in 1850, where he built a unique limestone cottage in a stone quarry. Unfortunately Ignatz Bruch died a slow death in 1860 at the age of 38, probably from an occupational disease such as silicosis. The widow Bruch then married Swiss-born Peter Guertler in about 1865. Ignatz and Otilie Bruch had two girls, Theresa and Maria, and Peter Guertler and Otilie later had a son, Peter Guertler, Jr.

"Ignatz Bruch and his brother Valentin had the stone contract on the Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Alton, Illinois in 1855. The church was completed in 1857 and still stands today.

"Ignatz Bruch's last will and testament names Theresa and Maria as heirs. He made out the will on April 21, 1860. It is not in his handwriting (he may have been too ill at the time). Much of it is in legal language. He died on July 14, 1860.

Notes for OTILIE/OTILLIE WALTER:   It appears Otilie came to the States in 1849, three years after Ignatz. She also went to Cincinnati. Her picture with Ignatz was taken in Cincinnati, probably in 1850. Did Otilie came with her brother, Anton Walter, Jr. He fought in the Civil War on the Union side and was honorably discharged and granted U.S. citizenship in 1865.

The obituary for Otilie reads: "Mrs. Peter Guertler, Sr., died at 415 o'clock Sunday afternoon at her home on upper Alby street. She suffered a paralytic stroke two weeks ago from which she never rallied. Mrs. Guertler was aged 78 years and 9 months. She was born in Baden, Germany, December 13, 1824. She came to America in 1846, and she has been a resident of Alton over fifty-five years. She was an estimable lady, beloved by all who knew her. She leaves beside her aged husband one son, Peter Guertler, Jr., four grandchildren and two great grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Francis Tillner, of Cincinnati, Ohio. Funeral arrangements are not complete."

In an effort to track down Mrs. Francis Tillner, her sister, I discovered Franziska (the German spelling) Tillner in the Ohio 1900 Soundex. She was born in June 1833 in Germany and was living alone in Columbia Township, Hamilton County, Ohio. In the1900 Federal Census her first name is spelled Francisca. She was a widow; had one child, however that child was not living at the time the census was taken on June 29, 1900. She was born in Germany, as were her parents. She immigrated to the United States in 1849 and had been in the United States 50 years when the census was taken. She could read, write and speak English. She owned her property and it was free from mortgage. She owned a farm.

A search of the Hamilton County, Ohio Citizen Record Abstracts 1837-1916 turned up Ernest W. Tillner who was 33 years old. He came from Goritz, Saxony, departing the German port of Bremen and arriving in New Orleans on November 5, 1849. He filed his declaration of intent on October 2, 1854.

In a search of the death index for the Cincinnati Freie Presse, one of the several German Newspapers in Cincinnati at the time, we found Ernst Wilhelm Tillner. His death notice appeared in the paper on April 17, 1889. He was 69 years and six months old when he died but his death date was not given. Then, in the index of death notices in the Cincinnati Volksblatt newspaper, his death was listed on April 15, 1889. The death notice appeared in the paper on the 16th and 17th of April. He was 69 years, six months and ten days old when he died. Thus he was born October 5, 1819. One of his obituaries says the survivors are Franziska Tillner, born Bieser, widow, Malwene (Malwine) Grimm, born Tillner, daughter, and John Grimm, son-in-law.

Franziska Tillner was also shown in this index. She died January 27, 1916 at the age of 83. Her death notice appeared in the paper on the 28th and 29th of January, 1916. The obituaries are in German. According to the obituary her maiden name appears to be Bieser.

Emigration: In the index of Intent to Naturalize is Ignatz from Baden, arriving in NY 9 Sept 1846 and declaring 29 March 1850, age 27. He may have finalized his naturalization wherever he lived next. There was also a Jacob Bruck, 30, also from Baden, arriving 1846, declaring in 1848.

The 1870 United States Federal Census for Illinois, Madison County, Alton, shows Theresa Bruch, age 17, single, living with Peter Gurtler, 42,Clerk, his wife Othile, 42, Housekeeper, and son Peter, age 4.

The records from Oak Hill Cemetery, Elk City, Kansas, show that Mrs. Charles Behrens is buried in Blk 1, Lot 39, Space 5: "Behrens, Theresa died 3-16-80 age 28 Y." There is no stone for Charles Behrens who owns the lot. According to the 1880 Mortality Table for Montgomery County, Kansas, Theresa died of dropsy following childbirth and, according to family lore, is buried with the baby in her arms. Cause of Death: Dropsy - Medical Information: 1880 Mortality Table lists her death from Dropsy.

Notes for CHARLES H. BEHRENS/BEHERENS: According to the 1920 Census, Charles Behrens emigrated to the United States in 1858 and was naturalized in 1863. In that census record he is listed as 79 years old, born in Germany, and is living with his daughter and son-in-law, Thomas and Otillia Harper in Dolton, Illinois.

On July 10, 1889, in Elk City, Kansas, Charles Behrens signed his name in his daughter's autograph book: "Remember me when this you see, When miles apart I may be, When in my grave I make my bed, Remember me when I am dead. Your father, Charles Beherens." (adding another "e" to his name) All other spellings of his name are Behrens.

And I don't think that we will have very much winter weather any more this year. You are having it pretty cold there I guess. Anyway the papers states it so. This is a pretty nice town, a population of about thirty thousand. There is a new town...."

In a letter dated March 7th, 1915, Mrs. W. Musson writes:
"Dear Grace and Tillie - I received a card from Grace a few days ago first -- after her Grandfather went away since then received a letter and card for Mr. Behrens. I do not know where he is at present -- so I will return the letter to you. We were all so glad to see him once more he was looking so well has changed very little. I think time has been very kind to him. His stay with us was short because he had so many friends to see and visit. He spent one day with Leighton. Everybody was so glad to see him. He certainly has lots of friends here. Tillie I have not heard from Carl (Charlie) for a long time. Ed Truitt visited us a few weeks ago and of course he knew Charlie as well as we did and said he was in Winfield [Cowley County, Kansas?] three or four years ago and as he was walking along the street he seen a man standing on the sidewalk and the nearer he came to him he felt he knew him so he stepped in front of him and said Hello Carl. He said Charlie looked startled for a minute then he said Ed Truitt. I am glad to see you. Ed said they talked about an hour, he said Charlie why don't you write home and tell them where you are and what you are doing, oh I will sometime he said. He told Ed he was working for a train was on his way west - and Ed was coming home. That is the last we have ever heard of him. I would give anything to know where he is - poor little Charlie. I always thought so much of him. It comes to me so often and I think I can hear him say Aunt Belle I am going up the river can you do something for me and of course I understood knew right away he wanted me to fix him a little lunch and he never asked in vain you know he was here so much and he always called me Aunt Belle just like Pearl did. Tillie did you know Pearl died the 16th of April last - she left a husband and 4 children. It was so hard to give her up. With much love to all I shall close. Your friend Mrs. W. Musson"

Generation No. 4

5. David Michael4 JACOBS (Daniel Martin3, John Michael2, LEWIS1) was born March 01, 1856 in Mercer P.O., Lincoln County, North Carolina, and died November 15, 1944 in Rising Star, Texas. He married Martha Ellen (Mattie) WYATT December 27, 1885, daughter of Daniel WYATT and Martha MAYFIELD.
Notes for David Michael JACOBS: At an early age, David Michael Jacobs moved to Huntsville, Kansas with his parents, Daniel Martin and Martha Melinda Johnson Jacobs. He lived in Kansas until he was 20 years old. He was too young to fight in the Civil War, but his father was killed in the war and was buried at War Eagle, Arkansas. In 1876, with his mother, a brother and his sisters, David Michael went to Sipe Springs, Comanche County, Texas.

He attended As-Ran College at Cresson and taught school for a short time. He was then engaged in the mercantile business operating a dry goods and grocery store. On December 27, 1885 he married Martha Ellen Wyatt in Sipe Springs.

David and Mattie moved to Rising Star, Eastland County, Texas in 1897, where they operated a store under the name of D. M. Jacobs & Co. After selling the business in 1903, they moved to Okra, Texas where David engaged in farming for a few years. They moved back to Rising Star and entered the mercantile business again with H. E. Anderson under the firm name of Anderson-Jacobs Company. This business was later sold to Higginbotham Brothers. The Jacobs made their home northwest of Rising Star where the original home is still in use. David engaged in farming and was a cotton and peanut buyer until his retirement.

D. M. Jacobs has been credited with almost single handed bringing the railroad to Rising Star. He was very involved in the civic welfare of the community and gave much of his time to community work. The Jacobs were lifelong members of the Methodist Church.

He also wrote poetry, and owned an interest in the bank and newspaper.

Notes for Martha Ellen (Mattie) WYATT: Martha's parents had moved from Whitley County, Kentucky and had settled on the three-mile strip between Kansas and the nation. After homesteading what was considered government land for several years, President Grant gave the land back to the Indians. This loss of property broke Daniel Wyatt physically and financially.
