The rewards that one gets from a garden are of various kinds. There are the material products--flowers, vegetables, fruits--to be enjoyed through the several senses, or shared with others and thereby doubly enjoyed. There is the physical benefit and enjoyable recreation to be gained from garden work. There is the pride of ownership of something fine and beautiful, and the inspiration of working hand in hand with nature in creating it. Sometimes there is the thrill of an award or other recognition for something unusually good. Always there is the well-merited satisfaction of having accomplished something that enhances the home and benefits the community.

But these rewards are not to be had for the wishing! The smallest garden no less than the elaborate estate represents the result of the combination of four basic factors or elements: the materials of gardening; the means to gardening; the methods of gardening; and the background of gardening.

• Materials: These are first, the plants that make gardens, and, second, the soil in which they grow.
• Means to gardening are the implements, accessories and aids with which plants are grown and gardens are made and cared for: tools, fertilizers, spray materials, hotbeds--in fact, all objects that are neither plants nor part of the soil.
• Methods, which include all details of design or planning; construction and planting; and maintenance, or culture and protection.
• Background is, of course, what all gardens furnish for the lives of those who live in them or view them--the relation of individual plants and gardens to one another and to things outside them. It includes elementary facts about the natural sciences which underlie plant growth; it touches theories and principles, and the agencies and institutions from or through which gardeners can obtain information and help. It is that which gives to garden work a larger outlook, a broader horizon, more vision than are associated with mere manual labor.

I became intrigued by water gardening, and not having room for a pond, I installed a two-barrel water garden; the sound of water flowing from one barrel to the other is quite soothing.
