Captain Simon KOLLOCK of Lewes, Sussex Co., Delaware, was from a prominent family whose allegiances were divided during the American Revolution. Simon was not only sympathetic to the British during the conflict, he played such an active role in military efforts for the King that the State of Delaware refused to pardon him after the war. His property in Delaware was forfeited to the State. He lived out the rest of his life in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.

There is a published genealogy of the KOLLOCK family [E. J. Sellers. 1897. Genealogy of Kollock family of Sussex County, Delaware. Privately printed, Philadelphia, PA]. Unfortunately, the line of descent given in the publication is hopelessly garbled. A supplement and correction was published in 1922; it corrected some of the earlier information, but compounded some of the errors, erroneously mixing the many Simons and Shepherds among families and generations. Some work has been done on the family since but, considering its prominence in early Delaware, the KOLLOCK genealogy is still definitely a work in progress. Below is my attempt to synthesize what is known about the Canadian Loyalist segment of the family. There is also an annotated KOLLOCK bibliography. I would appreciate any additions, corrections, comments, or suggestions for further research. Information on the KOLLOCKs who stayed in "the States" can be found at the website "The Kollock Family in America."

It is possible to fairly confidently present Simon KOLLOCK's lineage in America.

1-Jacob KOLLOCK b. 1657, possibly in France. Tradition has it that the family name was COLLOQUE, but it was changed to KOLLOCK when the French Huguenot family fled to Holland. In America, Jacob settled in Lewes, Sussex Co., Delaware, and married Mary LAWERSON. [There seems to be no basis for the often stated belief that he was married to a Mary Phillips.] One of their children was Simon KOLLOCK.

2-Simon KOLLOCK (Simon-2, Jacob-1) married Comfort SHEPHERD [not the widow Comfort (Shepherd) Prettyman, as is often reported], and had Shepherd KOLLOCK

3- Shepherd KOLLOCK (Shepherd-3, Simon-2, Jacob-1) married Mary GODDARD 16 Apr 1737 in Philadelphia, PA; one of their children was the Simon KOLLOCK who is the subject of this review.

4-Simon KOLLOCK (Simon-4, Shepherd-3, Simon-2, Jacob-1) was b. 11 Mar 1744, probably in Lewes, Delaware. He married 1st 31 Oct 1765 in Lewes, DE, Catherine PERRY [who died 14 Sep 1766]. They had one child, Charles KOLLOCK (5) born 21 Aug 1766 and died 22 Oct 1766.

After Catherine PERRY's death, Simon married 2nd Anne Catherine BURTON [born ca 1748]. They had five children for whom I can find records, three boys [Jacob, Joseph, William Shepard] and two girls [Elizabeth, and (probably) Jane]. As the American Revolution began, Simon KOLLOCK declared for the British and helped organize and recruit the Loyal American Regiment [LAR], in which he became a Captain. He apparently was in several significant battles with his regiment, and also served for a time as liaison to General Benedict Arnold. His sons Jacob KOLLOCK and Joseph KOLLOCK, although not legally old enough to fight, served as volunteers in the LAR. Much of Simon's service appears to have been based on Long Island, New York. It isn't clear where Catherine and the younger children were from 1777 until the British Loyalist troops were mustered out in 1782-1783. When the family was forced to leave New York for exile in Canada, their youngest son, William Shepard KOLLOCK, and maybe the two daughters stayed behind with relatives. [NOTE: the best information on Simon KOLLOCK's military career appears to be that compiled in 1987 by Dr. D. R. Facey-Crowther; a copy of his paper, entitled "Jacob Kollock (1769-1860s)", is on file at the Provincial Archives in Fredericton, N. B.]

In New Brunswick, the Kollocks were given Crown land in the St. John River Valley near Fredericton, but with other families they petitioned for (and eventually received) land in the Miramichi River valley near Richibucto, Kent [then Northumberland] County. Simon KOLLOCK was appointed to the grand jury in 1793, held a number of local offices, and served as magistrate and justice of the peace for Northumberland County from 1800 to 1814.

It has been assumed that Simon KOLLOCK died about 1814, as he does not appear in Northumberland and Kent county records after that date, and because his wife Anne Catherine later was living in Saint John, N. B., with their daughter. However, it has come to light that Simon married 3rd in Onslow, Colchester Co., Nova Scotia in 1815, Esther McLELLAN, the widow of Dr. Daniel EATON. [No divorce record from Catherine has been found.] In 1820, Simon (then a resident of Onslow) sold property in Richibucto to William McCULLY and James HARRINGTON, husbands of two of his granddaughters. He died in Onslow 13 July 1832. His widow Esther sold their Onslow property in 1847 to her son Daniel EATON Jr. She died in Truro, Nova Scotia, 19 September 1863.

It isn't clear when Anne Catherine [BURTON] KOLLOCK began living apart from Simon. It is possible that she never moved to the Miramichi area with him. In April 1799 and June 1803, she sold property in Fredericton, presumably that acquired as their original New Brunswick land grant. Simon's name was not on either transaction. Anne Catherine died in Saint John, 7 June 1845, at age 97, and was buried in the Loyalist Burial Ground.

5-Jacob KOLLOCK (Simon-4, Shepherd-3, Simon-2, Jacob-1) was born ca. 1769, probably in Lewes, Sussex County, Delaware. He was only about 13 when in March 1782, he enlisted as a volunteer in the Loyal American Regiment. He was exiled with his family to New Brunswick in 1782 or 1783, and lived there the rest of his life. He had several land grants, and at various times lived at Bay du Vin, Richibucto, and Kouchibouguac. Among his positions in the county were surveyor of roads, and overseer of the poor. In 1809 he was appointed first commanding officer of the Second Northumberland Militia, a position he held until his retirement in 1828. He was still alive in 1861, living with his son James KOLLOCK in Carlton Parish, Kent County. I've haven't determined his death date or burial place.

Jacob married 20 February 1790, Miriam HORTON, daughter of one of the Northumberland County magistrates. Six or seven children have been identified who probably belong with this family, although it is possible that some of them belong with Jacob's brother Joseph KOLLOCK [see below].

6-Joseph KOLLOCK (Jacob-5, Simon-4, Shepherd-3, Simon-2, Jacob-1) allegedly born 1791. No other information has come to light on him, and it is possible he never existed. Some copies of Kent County, New Brunswick censuses erroneously name Joseph, when James KOLLOCK (b. ca 1800) is actually meant.

6-Mary Eliza KOLLOCK (Jacob-5, Simon-4, Shepherd-3, Simon-2, Jacob-1) born 1792. She married 23 Nov 1812, James HARRINGTON, and had at least five children: James Simon Kollock HARRINGTON, William John HARRINGTON, Charles Henry HARRINGTON, Martha Jane HARRINGTON and Julia Isabelle HARRINGTON. They later lived at Cornhill, Kings County, New Brunswick. [See my HARRINGTON webpage for more details.]

6-Shepherd Franklin KOLLOCK (Jacob-5, Simon-4, Shepherd-3, Simon-2, Jacob-1) was born 28 February 1793, apparently in Bathhurst, Gloucester Co., N. B. . He married 23 March 1814, Mary Eliza TAYLOR of Kings County, N. B. Mary died about 1834, and Shepherd moved with his family to Wisconsin where he died in 1843.

7-William E. KOLLOCK (Shepherd-6, Jacob-5, Simon-4, Shepherd-3, Simon-2, Jacob-1) born 3 Oct 1815; d. 21 Oct 1889; m. June 1841 Ann HUNTER. This family apparently did not stay in Wisconsin with William's siblings. They allegedly went "West," and may have been in Kansas in 1880.

7-Jane E. KOLLOCK (Shepherd-6, Jacob-5, Simon-4, Shepherd-3, Simon-2, Jacob-1) born 13 June 1817; m. in Bathurst 6 Oct 1837, Thomas CURRIE. They moved to St. Clair County, Michigan.

7-Wellington KOLLOCK (Shepherd-6, Jacob-5, Simon-4, Shepherd-3, Simon-2, Jacob-1) born 19 Jan 1820; m. Ruth Jane DICKINSON; died 1863 Stevens Point, WI.

7-Ann KOLLOCK (Shepherd-6, Jacob-5, Simon-4, Shepherd-3, Simon-2, Jacob-1) born 25 Nov 1822.

7-Mary Eliza KOLLOCK (Shepherd-6, Jacob-5, Simon-4, Shepherd-3, Simon-2, Jacob-1) born 15 Apr 1824; died 3 July 1828.

7-George Washington KOLLOCK (Shepherd -6, Jacob-5, Simon-4, Shepherd-3, Simon-2, Jacob-1) born 13 Dec 1825 Bathurst; m. Lizzie BEAUMONT.

7-Mary Eliza KOLLOCK (Shepherd-6, Jacob -5, Simon-4, Shepherd-3, Simon-2, Jacob-1) born 3 May 1827 Richibucto; m. George SANFORD.

7-Henry KOLLOCK (Shepherd-6, Jacob-5, Simon-4, Shepherd-3, Simon-2, Jacob-1) born 12 Dec 1828 Richibucto; m. PERMELIA BARBER.

7-Nelson Franklin KOLLOCK (Shepherd-6, Jacob-5, Simon-4, Shepherd-3, Simon-2, Jacob-1) born 28 June 1830 Bathurst; m. [not sure whether 1st or 2nd] Ruth Jane DICKSON, widow of brother Wellington KOLLOCK; also married Otillia D. SHEARIER; died 1904 Almond, WI.

7-Frances KOLLOCK (Shepherd-6, Jacob-5, Simon-4, Shepherd-3, Simon-2, Jacob-1) born 9 Nov 1833.

6-George KOLLOCK (Jacob-5, Simon-4, Shepherd-3, Simon-2, Jacob-1) born say 1794; m. Christine McINNIS before 1816; had a land grant at Kouchibouguac Lagoon, Carlton Parish, Kent Co., N. B. No death or burial information. The latest record of this family in Kent County is 1831; possibly they left New Brunswick after that time.

7-Elizabeth Anne KOLLOCK (George-6, Jacob-5, Simon-4, Shepherd-3, Simon-2, Jacob-1) born 22 March 1816. She may be either the Elizabeth who married James McDONALD 21 Aug 1836, or the one who married Simon JAMES 10 Oct 1842.

7-Simon KOLLOCK (George-6, Jacob-5, Simon-4, Shepherd-3, Simon-2, Jacob-1) born 1 Oct 1819. No further records.

7-John KOLLOCK (George-6, Jacob-5, Simon-4, Shepherd-3, Simon-2, Jacob-1) born 13 Jan 1830. No further records.

6-Anne Elizabeth KOLLOCK (Jacob-5, Simon-4, Shepherd-3, Simon-2, Jacob-1) born 1795; m. William McCULLY 19 March 1814, had six children: Mary Jane McCULLY, Catherine A. McCULLY, Rebecca McCULLY, Samuel Thomas McCULLY, Ann Elizabeth McCULLY, and William Shepherd McCULLY. Many descendants in Kings County, N. B., from Samuel Thomas McCULLY family. Anne Elizabeth died at Richibucto 1886.

6-James KOLLOCK (Jacob-5, Simon-4, Shepherd-3, Simon-2, Jacob-1) born ca. 1800; married 5 Jan 1837 at Richibucto, Elizabeth THURRAT [b. ca. 1816]; both living in Carlton Parish, Kent County 1881; no death or burial information.

7-William KOLLOCK (James-6, Jacob-5, Simon-4, Shepherd-3, Simon-2, Jacob-1) born ca. 1839. No information after 1861.

7-James KOLLOCK (James-6, Jacob-5, Simon -4, Shepherd-3, Simon-2, Jacob-1) born ca. 1840. No information after 1861.

7-Simon KOLLOCK (James-6, Jacob-5, Simon -4, Shepherd-3, Simon-2, Jacob-1) born ca. 1842. No information after 1861.

7-Jane KOLLOCK (James-6, Jacob-5, Simon-4, Shepherd-3, Simon-2, Jacob-1) born ca 1847. No information after 1861.

7-Ann KOLLOCK (James-6, Jacob-5, Simon-4, Shepherd-3, Simon-2, Jacob-1) born ca. 1850. No information after 1861.

7-Marian KOLLOCK (James-6, Jacob-5, Simon -4, Shepherd-3, Simon-2, Jacob-1) born ca. 1852. No information after 1861.

6-Catherine KOLLOCK (Jacob-5, Simon-4, Shepherd-3, Simon-2, Jacob-1) born ca. 1805; married John POWER 4 July 1821 and had Mary Elizabeth Ann POWER (b. 4 Dec 1825), Rosanna POWER (b. before Feb 1830), and [probably] Joseph POWER (b. ca 1822) and George POWER. John POWER apparently died before 1861, at which time Catherine was living in Carlton Parish, Kent County with her brother James KOLLOCK.

5-Joseph KOLLOCK (Simon-4, Shepherd-3, Simon-2, Jacob-1) born about 1771, probably in Lewes, Sussex Co., DE. Although he was only about 12 years old at the time, Joseph volunteered for the Loyal American Regiment. According to Dr. Facey-Crowther [cited above], he did not fight for the British but spent his short enlistment time in New York City, one of the safest places during the Revolution. When his family went to New Brunswick in 1782 or 1783, he went with them.

Joseph petitioned for land in Northumberland [now, Kent] County with his father in 1785, and with his brother Jacob in 1789. He received no land on these occasions, apparently because he was not yet 21 years old [although I don't think all New Brunswick grantees had to be 21]. He again applied for land in August 1792, when he would have been of age, but none was granted.

No further records of Joseph have been found. He may have died, or may have left the area. As noted above, some of the children attributed to Jacob KOLLOCK may belong to Joseph, but there is not yet any support for that idea.

5-William Shepard KOLLOCK (Simon-4, Shepherd-3, Simon-2, Jacob-1) was born 20 Nov 1775, probably in Lewes, Sussex Co., DE. He did not go to New Brunswick with his family, but I don't know which relatives kept him. He married Elizabeth BAGWELL, and they had one child. William was a mariner, and his death 25 Nov 1807 was allegedly the result of being poisoned by his ship's cook. I haven't been able to trace the details of this story.

6-Joseph KOLLOCK (William Shepard-5, Simon-4, Shepherd-3, Simon-2, Jacob-1) married Sarah HOUSTON.

5-Elizabeth KOLLOCK (Simon-4, Shepherd-3, Simon-2, Jacob-1) born about 1776 probably in Lewes, Sussex Co., DE. There is some question whether she came New Brunswick at the same time as her parents, or whether she came later. In 1851, she was living in Saint John, St. John Co., N. B., with Jane HALSALL and her family. I suspect Jane was her sister.

5-Jane [?] KOLLOCK (Simon-4, Shepherd-3, Simon-2, Jacob-1). Family records indicate that a second KOLLOCK daughter lived in Saint John, N. B. I suspect that she was Jane [KOLLOCK] HALSALL, wife of Henry HALSALL, but I haven't confirmed it, yet.
