**Updated: 11/09/2007**

Religious Vocations: Some find this website in searching for a Catholic high school seminary to attend.  Brunnerdale Seminary served this purpose for the Missionaries of the Precious Blood for 50 years.  It closed in 1981, but the spirit of Brunnerdale Seminary is alive.  More important, the Missionaries of the Precious Blood continue to be a very active and growing Apostolic Community.   If you are interested in a vocation as a priest or brother, please Click Here to contact the Director of Vocations through the Missionaries of the Precious Blood-Cincinnati Province Website.

Brunnerdale Alumni/Former Students (1931-1984) are encouraged to hold Class Reunions in conjunction with the AMICI Gathering held every two years.

Brunnerdale High School Seminary
1931-1981

Brunnerdale High School Seminary was owned and operated by the Missionaries of the Precious Blood  (C.PP.S).  For fifty years, Brunnerdale served as the center of high school education for the American Province of the Missionaries of the Precious Blood, differing from other Catholic high schools in that it was for young men who were considering the priesthood or brotherhood as a possible vocation. It closed as a high school seminary in 1981.  The building and grounds were sold in 1989 and it is now Glenmoor Country Club.

Race Memorial Chapel

Brunnerdale was located midway between the cities of Canton and Massillon in northeastern Ohio.  The seminary complex sat approximately in the middle of a 450 acre plot.  About 80 of these acres were devoted to campus.  The main building of Brunnerdale was equipped to house approximately 250 students.  It included the Race Memorial Chapel, classrooms and administrative offices, an auditorium, a gymnasium with bleacher space for 750 spectators, an indoor swimming pool, dormitories and locker rooms, and recreational facilities.

There are hundreds of Brunnerdale Alumni/Former Students. In 1963-64 alone, the enrollment at Brunnerdale was 286 students from 20 different states.   The Brunnerdale Alumni Web Page is available to help keep Brunnerdale Alumni/Former Students up-to-date on the whereabouts and happenings of their classmates, friends, and former Brunnerdale faculty/staff members (as well as to help locate them) and to announce upcoming reunions.

*** DIARY FOUND AT BRUNNERDALE ***

This "DIARY" was found in 1978 at Brunnerdale Seminary---in a third floor storage room at the top of the back staircase---above the auditorium and adjacent to a student dorm. The "backstage" room was used to store theater props. Brunnerdale students started this Diary in 1952. They were assigned to daily work in the stage and backstage areas of the auditorium---cleaning, building and tearing down sets, keeping inventory of theater materials, etc. The Diary then remained hidden for 17 years. It was found by a Brunnerdale student in 1969. He was assigned to the same daily work as those students before him. Having found the Diary, this student decided to "renew its use" and additional enteries were made in 1969. No other entries had been made in the Diary for over 30 years. Beginning in 2001, as a tribute to the 70th Anniversary of Brunnerdale Seminary opening its doors to students, the signatures and entries of Brunnerdale Alumni/Former Students and Former Faculty/Staff are being sought to complete the Diary. It will be available at AMICI Gatherings for you to add your signature/entry.

Greetings from Fr. Lee Flaherty (11/16/98)
"The Rock"

Hi all you B-dale Alums out there (no alumnae are there?)! Got a few goosebumps, or should I say felt some moss growing (rocks don't get goosebumps) as I read some things and saw some pictures. This past summer I was a bit under the weather and did not travel far from my home base here in Whiting--Maybe next year I can get to some of the reunions. Keep them posted on the Web. I do have some album pictures, and some super 8mm movies if anyone is interested. Got some from the b-ball squad, I think. Thanks to Tom B for putting this thing out. It beats driving around the country trying to find some of you guys. Drop me a note at ljflah@nnex.net and we'll see if we can connect. HAPPY TURKEY DAY TO ALL!
Fr. Lee Flaherty, C.PP.S. (aka "The Rock")
ljflah@nnex.net

[NOTE FROM TOM B: I also have 8mm movies of B-Dale from 1978-1980. I have transferred them to videotape. Looking for an "alum" who has the equipment to convert video to MPEG so that short movie clips can be displayed on the B-Dale Alumni Web Page. Perhaps the same could be done with Fr. Flaherty's super 8mm movies.]

Greetings from Fr. Barry Fischer, Moderator General of the C.PP.S (10/29/98)

Congratulations on the great Web Page! I am a Brunnerdale Alumnus of the years 1960-1964. Our class, if not mistaken, was the second largest ever to enter Brunnderdale. We entered with over one hundred and graduated with 52 (If memory doesn't fail me!) I am in Rome, serving as the Moderator General of the Congregation. It gives me great pleasure to recall those B'dale days and congratulate you for the fine Page you put together. Unfortunately to my knowledge, our Graduating Class never had a reunion. Is there anyone in my Class of 1964 out there? I'd love to hear from you.

Bernard Killinger
(Brunnerdale Alumnus, 1939-1942)

Mr. Bernard Killinger sent the following E-Mail to the Brunnerdale Alumni Web Page:

Greetings,
It was my good fortune to attend Brunnerdale from August of 1939 thru June of 1942, then on to St. Joe's. I have visited Brunnerdale many times in the past thirty years just to see the old place. You can imagine the disappointment in finding that it has been turned into a country club.
During my time at Brunnerdale, I kept a journal of events which I still have, and even have a few pictures of old faculty and students. Our prefect of students was Fr. Urban Iffert and Fr. Ignatius Wagner was the equivalent of the Headmaster. I forget what title was used to indicate his position.
I am happy to have found this page and will watch its development with great anticipation. The happiest years of my life were spent at Brunnerdale!    Bernard Killinger

REQUIESCANT IN PACE

Brother Bernie Barga, C.PP.S. was called to his new life in Christ on December 26, 2001.  He died of congestive heart failure at the age of 73. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on December 29, 2001 at St. Charles Center (Carthagena, Ohio).  In his homily, Father Rick Neiberding, C.PP.S., told the mourners that "although the cause of death is listed as heart failure, Bernie's heart could never fail. It just gave out" (C.PP.S. Today, Spring 2002, p. 16).

Father James Froelich, C.PP.S.  was called to his new life in Christ on July 10, 1998.  He died in Africa at the age of 69.

Father Joseph Pax, C.PP.S. was called to his new life in Christ on April 14, 2007.  The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on April 19, 2007 in Assumption Chapel at St. Charles Center (Carthagena, Ohio).  Internment followed in the Community Cemetery.

From Mike Ploetz (Class of 1966;MPPloetz@mail.wthg.com): Harry Patterson, Brunnerdale Class of 1967, passed away on Monday, April 5, 1999, at University Hospital in Cincinnati. He underwent surgery early in the day to amputate a leg above the knee then had a blood clot travel to his heart early in the evening. Anyone who knew Harry in the last ten or twenty years was aware of the recurring serious health problems he had to deal with but also knew him to be the eternal optimist. He made the best of the 50 years he had and took enormous enjoyment in the company of his family and friends. He was at Brunnerdale just his Junior and Senior years but always recollected those years as his best. Recalling "good times" with his classmates was something I often heard Harry do.

AMICI-C.PP.S.

As noted above, Brother Bernie Barga, C.PP.S. was called to his new life in Christ on December 26, 2001. He entered the Society of the Precious Blood (C.PP.S.) at Brunnerdale Seminary in 1943 and was incorporated in 1951.  Brother Bernie returned to Brunnerdale High School Seminary in 1976. He became the Spiritual Director at Brunnerdale Seminary (1979-1981). Brother Bernie served as a member of the C.PP.S. for 50 years.

In the January 2002 issue of the AMICI-C.PP.S. Newsletter, it was noted that Brother Bernie once wrote about an Amici gathering held one summer at St. Charles Center in Carthagena, Ohio. Brother Bernie wrote: "Evident was a lingering C.PP.S. attraction for bringing and keeping individuals together. It is the blood. It is in the C.PP.S. charism of the Blood of Christ. We are stained in the Blood of Christ. Jesus' words call us together. 'I have called you friends.' Amici."

Through AMICI-C.PP.S., the Missionaries of the Precious Blood have provided a means by which those who formed a bond through profession, ordination, or years of seminary studies through the C.PP.S. can remain together, as Brother Bernie said, in the Blood of Christ.

Many may not know, but Brother Bernie produced a video tribute to Brunnerdale and what it represented. Using clips from Fr. Wagner's original films of the construction of Brunnerdale Seminary (1929-1931), Brother Bernie provides insightful narration.  Brother Bernie speaks to the formative experiences we shared through our attending Brunnerdale--which we continue draw upon and seek in our lives today and in the future. "It is the blood." Brunnerdale, as the minor seminary of the Missionaries of the Precious Blood, closed in 1981. But we can now be together through AMICI-C.PP.S. and, no matter where we live, continue our relationship with and support the Missionaries of the Precious Blood. Please spread the word about AMICI-C.PP.S. to other Brunnerdale Alumni/Former Students.

THE BRUNNERDALE "DUGOUT"

For those of you that do not know or cannot recall, Brunnerdale had a Snack Shop called the "DUGOUT". It was originally located in the basement, but was moved to the sub-basement (close to the Gymnasium and Television Rooms). The DUGOUT was managed by the Student Council Treasurer. While I attended Brunnerdale, the Student Council Treasurer from 1976-77 to 1977-78 was Ronald Schnipke and from 1978-79 to 1979-80 it was Kenneth Schnipke (now Father Kenneth Schnipke, C.PP.S.). I purchased this piece of Bazooka Bubble Gum from the DUGOUT.

I paid good money for this gum. I have been saving it. The question that I have is, will either Ronald Schnipke or Father Kenneth Schnipke guarantee the quality (freshness) of the product sold to me? If not, can I get a fund?  Tom

REPLY FROM MR. RONALD SCHNIPKE AND FATHER KENNETH SCHNIPKE (05/17/99): The upper management team of the "Dugout" consulted a team of experts from Bazooka International, Inc. and they guaranteed freshness for a period of 20 years. Beyond that, they were cautious. After consultation with the most recently known investors, the managers of the "Dougout" during the years 1978-80 agree to refund the money for any products sold that may not have retained their freshness, color, or texture. This refund will only occur with a dated proof of purchase personally signed by the managers and/or any of their designated associates. Our motto was always centered on customer satisfaction and that tradition continues to this day. If you have difficulty with attaining the necessary documentation identified above, you can always consult our recent web page--www.whocaresanyhow@dugout.com. The management accepts no legal responsibility which may occur in the consumption of this product (i.e., broken teeth, numbness of teeth and gums, bad breath, and diarrhea).

REUNION: CLASS OF 1958
The Class of 1958 held their 40th reunion in Snowmass Colorado the
first week of October (Snowmass Lodge & Club; website: http://www.snowmass-lodge.com).
Dan Drew, M.D., Class of 1958(dandrew@inetdirect.net), sent the following report:
"We (The Class of1958) are still recovering from the excitement and wonderful
experience of our 40th anniversary reunion. It was held in Snowmass Colorado the
first week of October and was truly a HUGE SUCCESS! Of the eighteen '58 grads,
14 showed up for the event! One classmate (John Nordenbrock) is deceased...so that
means only three were unable to participate.
Although it was billed as our "40th," the truth is, this was the first time
in 40 years we had all been together again!
We had a copy of our official "graduation picture" on the steps of the
Brunnerdale altar in our caps and gowns...and we had a professional photographer
take a group picture of the 14 of us "lined up"exactly as in 1958. I've not seen
the picture yet; but I'm sure it will be worth posting when we finally get it
developed and digitized.
There was lots of golf, card-playing, potato chips, beer, and general reminiscing.
We had three evenings of "formal" activities, including Saturday Evening
Masswith our classmate, Bishop Joe Charron (of Des Moines) presiding.
What a blast! We will most definitely be doing this again soon."

REUNION: CLASS OF 1965
"To all the alumni of the Class of '65, we are planning on having a
34th reunion sometime in 1999. Tiern [Mike Tierney] and myself feel it may be
too difficult reserving a place in the year 2000. There will be
many other celebrations and festivities occurring in 2000, our 35th year.
Love to hear from you! If anyone is in the Princeton, NJ area,
just look us up. We are located in West Windsor, NJ."

REUNION: CLASS OF 1969
"The Class of 1969 will hold its 30th year reunion on July 11, 1999, in
Cincinnati. The details have not been workedout yet, but an initial mailing will be sent soon
to as many classmates ascan be located. Bill Rettig is the main coordinator
and he can be reached at WJRETT@AOL.COM. We will submit more
information as it becomes available.
Good job on the B-Dale Web Page, it looks great!!!"

REUNION: CLASS OF 1973
"October 16 & 17, 1998: A very sincere Thank You goes out to Mark and Mary Grever
for hosting our 25th Class Reunion at their home& farm overlooking the Ohio River.
It made for a picturesque view and nice setting for our outdoor mass that was said
by Fr. Dave Kelly. Our great weekend began with dinner at the Montgomery Inn--Boathouse
in Cincinnati (Thanks Rick & Kate Kremer!!), followed by the usual chit-chat & memory
teasers at the Grever residence. Saturday morning, Fr. Bill Nordenbrock and
Tom Walters went out to add a couple more divots to the local golf course.
Tom Pisarick and I (Steve Brun)tried to strike it rich at the Argosy Riverboat.
My wife, Patty, is disappointedthat Tom & I didn't return in an armored car.
Tim Kirkbride and wife, Caroline, checked out the big city of Cincinnati trying to find the right antique.
When we all gathered back at Mark's, we met up with Steve Beickelman and wife, Lynn.
We had a really nice mass, followed by a superb prime rib dinner. Following dinner
and desert, we all received a short lesson in square dancing and line dancing (Quite comical!!).
Weall gathered to look at some 8mm movies from the wonder years and videotape taken at
Brunnerdale/Glenmoor of our 20th Class Reunion held in August of 1993. With the evening stars above,
the roar of the bonfire, and the sound of beer dripping into a plastic cup, the evening was
complete. Great Food, Great Friends, Great Memories!! You can't ask for anything more!
Thanks Brunnerdale!!!"
