What is Gridrunner++

Gridrunner++ is a frenetic 2-D shooting game from the brilliant mind of Jeff Minter, creator of such videogame masterpieces as Llamatron on all the old 16-bit computers, Tempest 2000 for the Atari Jaguar and Tempest 3000 for Nuon equipped DVD players. As with most Llamasoft games it is a fast-paced pixel-shattering mind-altering confection that will grab ahold of your frontal lobe and reduce you to a twitching pile of hopped up video game joy. Don't believe me? Download this beta test five-level demo and play for yourself.

Gridrunner++ is a modification and sequel to the classic 8-bit Gridrunner from the mid-eighties. It has been programmed by Jeff to run on most PPCs and on Windows compatable PCs in a PPC-emulating window. The concept is simple: you are a spaceship that flies around on top of a flashing, pulsating grid. Enemies come (for the most part) in the form of long chains called snakes that come at you from above, below and the sides. They want to kill you with bombs, pods, lasers, zappers and of course by simple kamikaze suicide attack. All that stands between you and pixelly doom is a constant stream of shots from the top of your ship, a mess of helpful sheep, and your trusty sheepie-zapper. Put on some rocking tunes, turn down your lights, and prepare to enter the grid.

This guide (as last modified on August 2, 2002) is concerned with gameplay in the five-level demo of the game, which is all that is currently available publicly. Within days we can expect Jeff to be done with the game (hopefully) and at that time you should be able to buy a copy for 5 UK pounds.. a great bargin!
