This page will be for 1/72 scale figures that I've painted or converted for Civil War wargaming. The actual figures are about 7/8 inch (22mm) tall. Paints are artist's acrylics, with Testor's "steel" or "brass" enamel drybrushed on metal parts. For conversions, I tend to swap arms and heads from different brands of Civil War figures. I also like to use ESCI "Colonial" era figures, since the uniforms were generally similar. A simple but effective technique for making a custom figure is to remove the head and reglue it turned to the left or the right. It's amazing the difference it can make. Not all of the detail shows in these scans...

Early Effort

Confederate Brigade Commander
This is a Confederate command stand I did several years ago. The officer is an ESCI French Foreign Legion figure (pith helmet replaced with kepi). The flag bearer and color guard are both from an Accurate Figures/Revell Union infantry set. The flag bearer's rifle was removed from his right hand and replaced by a wire flagstaff. The flag was drawn oversize using MS-Paint, printed out on a color printer, then glued to the flagstaff and "weathered" with thinned acrylic paint.

Conversion
This is a custom Marine officer I made for an "Assault on Fort Fisher" scenario. US Marine uniforms during the Civil War were similar to Army uniforms, but with different insignia. In the scan, you can't see the gold braid shoulder "knots" or red stripe on the pantleg, though the gold on his collar does show. I think the wine-colored waist sash is unique to Marines.

Accurate Figures/Revell Confederate Infantry NCO figure

US Marine Officer
Right arm & sword from ESCI British Colonial (Zulu Wars) figure, scabbard from IMEX cavalryman, head turned 45 degrees.
