Three Arkansas Destinations
- The Crystal-Ouachita Loop: There is a
small
Ouachita National Forest Park called Crystal west of
Hot Springs on Highway 27. Visitors wander around
in search of exposed crystals. It's about all there is to do there,
but it is habit-forming. After awhile, your body takes on that
crystal-hunting position as you look for that really great crystal.
From Crystal, it's an easy drive
around Ouachita Lake that is lined with
Corps of Engineers Parks,
a state park, and other national forest parks. Charlton
National Forest Park is worth a stop. Ouachita Lake itself is great for
canoeists with shallow inlets for easy docking. No one believes us,
but we saw a carp as big as our canoe there!
Hot Springs National Park is just a few miles to the
southeast of the lake.
-
Lake Bull Shoals: Located on the Arkansas-Missouri
border,
Lake Bull Shoals is a sprawling lake and one of the
lakes on
Trophy Bass 2. The
state park on the southeast side is a great stop-off if you
enjoy trout fishing in the
White River
that runs through the park.
-
Fayetteville-Devil's Den:
Fayetteville is one of
our favorite cities. Nestled in the mountains and home of the
University of Arkansas,
a lovely campus,
it's worth a tour. To the south on Highways 71 and 74,
check out
Devil's Den State Park. Built by the CCC in the 1930s,
it has everything including hiking to the cool, cool caves that
make a great haven on a hot day.
