Frank Safranek is still recovering from shoulder surgery but is making very good progress. Tim White managed to put the finishing touches on his car just two days before the race. With a fresh engine and many other changes to the car, White used the qualifying session for the regional race to break things in, so he did not qualify well. In the regional race, White had a great start and was in the third place after the first lap and managed to hold on to that position for the finish.
Sunday brought lots of rain. After a delay of three hours, the national qualifying session took place on a very wet track. Turn six was eliminated because of the water and the 2.2-mile configuration was used instead of the normal 2.5-mile configuration. There was standing water at several corners. Again White, not having rain tires, qualified deep in the pack. Bill Tucker was on the pole in his Firebird with Jim Wheeler three positions back.
White had an excellent start in the national race and was in third place before the first corner. Tucker spun coming out the first corner but Wheeler and White managed to avoid contact with Tucker. After five laps Wheeler pulled out a considerable lead on White who had a significant lead on Tucker. Unfortunately, White's clutch went away on the next lap and he pulled off at turn eight. White is upbeat and looking forward to his next race at Hallett Motor Racing Circuit on June 30th. He is also looking forward to his teammate's return.
